Understandably it can be a bit confusing when looking for movies to download what you are actually downloading before the file finishes. Maybe you don’t want a CAM release and would prefer a TELESYNC or vice-versa. What it really comes down to is preference and availability of the file. This guide will walk you through the different names, qualities and filetypes you’ll typically encounter when downloading movies via bittorrent.

Filename Structure

The easiest place to start is to look at the typical filename, although they may vary greatly, they usually follow a specific structure, let’s take a look at this title for example: RocknRolla.2008.DvDRip-aXXo

The filename actually gives you all the information you need, lets break it down:

  • RocknRolla – The name of the movie.
  • 2008 – The year the movie was released.
  • DVDRip – The type of release it is (quality), in this case it is ripped from a DVD.
  • aXXo – The release group/person.
  • Occasionally you will also see the language/subtitles the film is in in the filename as well

Release Types

Typically there are 6 types of release you will encounter:

  • CAM
  • TELESYNC (TS)
  • DVD-SCREENER (DVDSCR)
  • R5 LINE (R5)
  • DVD RIP (DVDRip)
  • BLU RAY RIP (BRRip)

Typically, these are ranked from worst (CAM) to best (BRRip) quality. Here is each one in a bit more detail. We’ll give each a score out of 10 so you have an idea of their total quality.

CAM: 1-3/10

A cam is a theater rip usually done with a digital video camera. Sound is taken from the on board microphone of the camera, and especially in comedies, laughter can often be heard during the film. Due to these problems picture and sound quality are usually quite poor.

TELESYNC (TS): 4/10

A TELESYNC is the same as a CAM except it uses an external audio source. A direct audio source does not ensure a good quality audio source, as a lot of background noise can interfere. A lot of the times a TELESYNC is filmed in an empty cinema or from the projection booth with a professional camera, giving a better picture quality. Quality ranges drastically. A high percentage of TELESYNC’s are CAM’s that have been mislabeled.

DVD-SCREENER (DVDSCR): 6-7/10

A advanced DVD, sent to rental stores, and various other places for promotional use. The main draw back is a ticker (a message that scrolls past at the bottom of the screen, with the copyright and anti-copy telephone number). Usually letterbox, but without the extras that a DVD retail would contain. Usually transferred to SVCD or DivX/XviD.

R5 LINE (R5): 6-7/10

R5 refers to a specific format of DVD released in DVD Region 5, the former Soviet Union, and bootlegged copies of these releases that are distributed on the Internet. In an effort to compete with movie piracy, the movie industry chose to create a new format for DVD releases that could be produced more quickly and less expensively than traditional DVD releases.

The image quality of an R5 release is generally comparable to a DVD Screener release, except without the added scrolling text and black and white scenes that serve to distinguish screeners from commercial DVD releases. The quality is better than Telecine transfers produced by movie pirates because the transfer is performed using professional-grade film scanning equipment.

DVD RIP (DVDRip): 8-10/10

A copy of the final released DVD. Should be excellent quality. DVDrips are released in SVCD and DivX/XviD.

BLU RAY RIP (BRRip): 10/10

A copy of the final released Blu Ray, typically 720p. BRRip’s are usually released in H264/MP4.

How to Play These Files?

DivX and XviD files can be played in your standalone DivX player (if you have one). If not you’ll need specific Codecs to play them which you can find all you’ll need in hour Helpful Software List. These Codecs will also work for H264/MP4 files.

As far as SVCD files go, they can be burned or the video files can be extracted (whatever your preference).

Eventually every bittorrent user (especially when dealing with older files) encounters the problem of incomplete downloads (stuck at 98%) or the problem of there just not being any or enough seeds to support their download. Understanding the problem is the first step to fixing it.

Being Stuck, Download Stops and Hangs at x%

Let’s assume you’re stuck at 98%…

The main reason for the download to stop at a certain percentage is because all the Seeders with complete copies of the file you are downloading have stopped sharing it or for some reason are unavailable. Your client still downloads all it can from the other peers in the swarm, but… that still only adds up to our hypothetical 98%!

Other reasons could include the primary tracker being down, or is overloaded and refusing connections. If this the case however, the file could reach completion once the tracker comes back online and reunites you with the seeders.

Lets assume that the tracker isn’t down or overloaded… now what?

You can try the following methods:

  • Find More Seeders by ReAnnouncing the Torrent using btReannounceR
  • Find More Seeders by Adding Trackers to your Torrents to

Using btReAnnounceR

btReannounceR is a online tool which can help you quickly find trackers that your torrent is currently tracked by. You can upload your torrent to their service here and view the results.

By clicking the reAnnounce button, this will reAnnounce your torrent to these trackers, and allow you to download a new torrent with new trackers inserted into it. Download that and retry your download now.

This is a much cleaner, easier method than the next,

However, if it fails you should at least take one last try…

Finding more Seeders by Adding More Trackers

This is actually an article on its own, but here’s the rundown:

  • Grab a list of trackers from our tracker list.
  • Add these trackers to your torrent by following the instructions in this article: Adding Additional Trackers to Your Torrents.
  • Watch and wait, if anyone on any of these trackers has your file, they will be listed, so keep a close eye on the Seed and Peer columns
  • Continue downloading and SEED!

And that’s basically it for now. If anyone knows other ways to revive dead torrents or find additional seeders please feel free to share!

Happy St. Patricks Day!

How to: run uTorrent in Linux

Here’s a brief tutorial that was requested in our forum. uTorrent is a very lightweight and easy to use bittorrent client, that unfortunately is unmatched by some of the Linux clients out there today. You can still have functioning WebUI and Automated RSS Downloading with uTorrent running in Ubuntu Linux, so if let’s get started!

Install Wine (Windows Emulator) in Ubuntu Linux

Wine is an open source software that allows you to run Windows software under different operating systems. With Wine you can run Windows software applications in Linux similar to how you would run them in Windows.

Provided you are running Ubuntu Linux; Open up a terminal and run the following commands:

sudo apt-get install wine

This will install Wine from Ubuntu’s software repositories along with all of the packages required to run it.

Download uTorrent (uTorrent.exe)

Since installing Wine in Ubuntu Linux may take a few minutes, in the meantime you can grab a copy of uTorrent (for windows), I’d recommend a stable release, (at the time of writing this the newest stable release is 2.0).

Open up another terminal and enter the following commands:

cd ~

This should bring you to your home directory (if you aren’t already there).

sudo mkdir utorrrent

This creates a /utorrent/ directory

cd utorrent

Change into the uTorrent directory

sudo wget http://download.utorrent.com/2.0/utorrent.exe

This begins downloads the utorrent.exe file into the new directory you just created, you should see the progress bar on the download.

Run uTorrent using Wine under Linux

By now Wine should be fully installed, we’re going to create a launcher and then run uTorrent using it. On your desktop right click and goto Create Launcher…

A new window will popup asking you to fill in the details for your new launcher, fill in the fields as follows:

Type: Application
Name: uTorrent
Command: wine “/home/USERNAME/utorrent/utorrent.exe /NOINSTALL”

** NOTE **
Where it says USERNAME fill in your Linux username!
Where it says /NOINSTALL is because you don’t want to install uTorrent in Linux, you don’t need to! It still saves your settings :)

And that’s it! You should now have a new launcher for uTorrent on your desktop!

Need a uTorrent Icon for Your Shortcut?

Yep, we think of everything open up a Terminal again and jump to your ~/utorrent/ directory:

cd ~/utorrent

And download this image:

sudo wget http://tipst3r.com/download_images/utorrent_icon.png

Next just goto Properties for the Launcher shortcut you made and click on the current icon, and browse your way to the utorrent_icon.png and use this as your new icon.

Now it looks all pretty on your desktop.

No Seeders? Not Always the Case! How to Revive a “Dead” Torrent

Just because that hard to find torrent can’t seem to find any seeds to download from, does not necessarily mean that there are 0 seeders available in the entire world!

Seeders are very important users to you, as they are the users with a complete version of the file you are seeking. So it makes sense in desperate times to search additional trackers when you are having a hard time tracking down some seeders!

Here’s where adding trackers from our Tracker List come in handy. What this allows you to do is check other trackers (that were not included in your .torrent file) to see if anyone else has the same file to download.

bittorrent tracker diagram

This is a huge benefit as it can help you:

• Track down and increase seeder counts for a file that had none, so that you can begin downloading it
• Add to your current amount of seeders to increase overall download speeds

You must keep in mind, that this situation will arise pretty rarely and may not always work, but if you do find yourself having a tough time finding seeders it’s definitely worth a shot.

Here’s How!

Bittorrent / uTorrent

For Bittorrent 6.4 and uTorrent 2.0 alike you can click on the torrent you are downloading and then select the Trackers tab at the bottom, right-click and select Add Tracker.

add tracker image 1, bittorrent and utorrent

As you can see by the image above, we are having a bit of a hard time finding seeds for our torrent…
In the next window, just add the trackers you want to add into the the trackers box and be sure to keep them separated by a line.

add tracker image 2, bittorrent utorrent
Hit OK, and you should see them added into your Trackers tab now, and your client should begin searching them.

add trackers image 3, bittorrent, utorrent, image 3
And would you look at that! We’ve found some Seeders!

Deluge

In Delgue, once the torrent is loaded right-click on it and goto Edit Trackers. Once inside you are given the option to Add trackers. After you have added all the trackers you desire, right-click again on the torrent and select Update Tracker.

add tracker, deluge, image 4

You can find a long list of trackers on our Tracker List page.
Happy Hunting! ?

How To Quickly Investigate A Fake BitTorrent Tracker

Back in 2007 we published a series of articles on various dodgy practices targeted at BitTorrent users. Many people were downloading torrents only to be told that they needed to install software like DomPlayer and 3WPlayer to get them to work. Of course, the torrents were fake.

We also reported on BitTorrent clients such as Torrent101, BitRoll and GetTorrent, which also caused caused a whole load of trouble for those who installed them – even uTorrent and WinZip users were in the sights of malware offloaders.

In an email yesterday to TorrentFreak, a reader pointed us to a problem torrent located here (removed). The file is clearly labeled as ‘The Wolfman DVDrip 2010 aXXo’ but it is a fake, a fact which can be quickly learned by reading the comments underneath the torrent. Nevertheless, we thought it might be interesting to demonstrate how it’s possible to look a little deeper.

The file is tracked by a whole range of trackers but one sticks out immediately.

http://tracker.torrentq.com/announce.php currently lists 48,416 seeds and 37,496 seeders for the supposed ‘The Wolfman’ movie, a highly attractive proposition for those inexperienced in dealing with fake torrents.

Of course the stats are faked, and are run from a tracker set up especially to deliver fake torrents. Indeed, it’s run on a subdomain of TorrentQ, a bad client we featured in an earlier article. Here’s a quick step-by-step of the method we used to investigate the tracker. There are other ways, but this is pretty simple so anyone can try this out.

It’s possible to find information about the files indexed on many trackers by using ’scrape’. In the case of the TorrentQ tracker, the scrape URL is located at http://tracker.torrentq.com/scrape.php. So first off, go to this URL and you’ll get the option to download a file, in this case ’scrape.php’ – download it.

In this file will be information about the files being seeded on this tracker.

Next use DeHackEd’s nice little online tool called DumpTorrentCGI. Browse to the ’scrape’ file on your hard drive, change output type to ‘/scrape’ and click the ‘decode’ button. You should get this report;

TorrentQ Scrape

Immediately you can see that all the files are apparently hugely popular, but of course, all of these stats are faked. To prove that, one can use a site like Torrentz.com, which creates its torrent URLs by using a torrent’s hash value. Simply test each torrent by using http://www.torrentz.com/ followed by the hash value, as shown below, and check the comments.

http://www.torrentz.com/0366eb6bdbab88f2ccd9397a0b421b3947c82e06

The torrents TorrentQ tracks are for Wolfman, Legion, My Name is Khan, The Book of Eli, From Paris With Love, Ninja Assassin, Edge of Darkness, Shutter Island and Dear John.

Every single one is flagged as a fake by commenters on Torrentz.com.

uTorrent: RSS Automatic Downloader

Today we’re going to learn how to download torrents automatically using an RSS feed. Typically you could adjust the setting for the feed to download just about anything, but for today we will configure it to download television shows. We are using uTorrent 1.8.5 for this example and a feed from EZTV.it. We will configure the show “Sons of Anarchy” to be downloaded automatically as soon as it is released.

Note: This method isn’t foolproof; occasionally an episode is missed due to some issue or another. It can be improved upon post your comments in the forums or down below.

1. Click on the Add RSS Feed button on the toolbar in uTorrent:

rss-automation-image-1

2.Tracking down a quality feed can be difficult,EZTV.it has been a bit shaky in the past, but lately has been solid as a rock. With the new EZRSS.it website up, you can use their feed, the url is: http://www.ezrss.it/feed/.

Enter the URL into the Feed URL box and use whatever you want as a Custom Alias (optional)
I recommend leaving the Do not automatically download all items option selected unless you know what you are doing, or are setting up a more custom feed (maybe a different tutorial).

rss-automation-image-2

3. If you click on the name of the feed on the left, it should have now loaded all the newest episodes from the RSS feed into the window. You will notice that if you right click on any of the episodes you could select to download them, but we would like to configure them to start downloading automatically.

You’ll notice the file names in the RSS feed vary greatly, so we will configure a filter to look for our specific show, and specific quality before it begins downloading.

Goto Options >> RSS Downloader (or hit CTRL + R) to bring up the RSS Downloader options screen. This is where you configure the filters to run against your RSS Feeds.

Now you need to understand 2 basic things, the structure of how files are named (particularily TV shows), and the syntax for the filters, luckily both are briefly explained below.

Filenames for television shows go basically as followed (Using Sons of Anarchy as an example). The showname should never change [Permanent], and certain items in the filenames will change episode-to-episode [Varies], we need to tune our filters to work with this:

Example: Sons of Anarchy – The Culling 2×12 [HDTV – FQM]

  • Sons of Anarchy = The show name, Duh. [Permanent]
  • The Culling = Optional episode name (not always included)
  • v2x12 = Season (2) Episode (12) [Varies]
  • [HDTV = Quality is HDTV [Varies]
  • [FQM] = Group that released this episode [Varies]

Typically filenames are labelled as above, but occasionally you might run across an episode where it is listed as Sons.of.Anarchy or Sons_of_anarchy which our filter has to be prepared for.

The syntax for the filter is quite simple, since we aren’t overly concerned with the episode name or the group who is releasing the episode (usually), we only need to focus on the name of the show:

sons?of?anarchy*

This works since, the ?’s are wildcards, meaning that the filename could be any of the possible filenames listed above. The * signifies that this is the end of the show name.

So now we have all the pieces to the puzzle, lets configure our filter you should now have the following:

  • Filter: sons?of?anarchy*
  • Not: [LEFT BLANK]
  • Save in: [SELECT A DIR TO SAVE IN]
  • Feed: [EZTV] (or all)
  • Quality: [HDTV] (or your preference (720p, etc.)
  • ALL REST LEFT BLANK
  • Label for new torrents: [TV] (optional)

rss-automation-image-3

4. Next, you want to save your filter, so it can be used/modified if needed. Simply click Add and a new filter will appear, type in your desired name (ex. Sons of Anarchy) and hit Enter to save it. Double-check that the correct information is saved and click close.

rss-automation-image-4

5. uTorrent periodically refreshes the RSS Feed and runs the filter against it, since there was an episode released tonight, it has already automatically picked it up and started downloading!

rss-automation-image-5

And voila! There you have it, from now on as long as uTorrent is up and running and as long as that RSS Feed is active and being updated, any show you create a filter for will automatically be downloaded!

Got some good RSS feeds?  Share them in the comments or in our forum!

uTorrent WebUI: Access your Torrents Anywhere!

WebUI is a feature in uTorrent that allows you to access and control uTorrent remotely.  It gives you almost complete control as if you were sitting right at the terminal.  There are a few limitations to this method and possibly a few security concerns.  However, it is very light-weight and easy to use/manager for anyone already familiar with the uTorrent client.

This tutorial is broken down into 4 easy to follow parts:

  • Pre-requisites (default locations)
  • Enabling Web UI  in uTorrent.
    • Accessing it remotely
    • Setting up a dynamic address for easy access. (Optional – Recommended)

For this tutorial we are using uTorrent 1.8.5 running on Windows 7.

Part 1 – Pre-requisites (setting default locations)

In order for Web UI to function properly please double-check your default download locations for files (.torrent files, and the downloaded files [complete/incomplete]).  You can access these by going to Options > > Preferences then selecting directories on the left menu.

webui image 1

Web UI only allows you to download to one directory for any torrents you manually add.

Once you have set all of your default locations, then you can enable WebUI.

Part 2 – Enabling Web UI in uTorrent

With the Options >> Preferences window still open, click on the WebUI option in the left menu.

Check the Enable Web UI box and I recommend changing the default username from Admin to something you will remember (for basic security reasons) and also changing the password to something you will remember.  I recommend NOT enabling a Guest account unless you have to.

I recommend running this service on a separate port than your listening port (a port other than whatever port you have selected under Connection).   You will most likely have to forward this new Web UI port on your router to access it from outside the network (see www.portforward.com for further information).

** Please note for our exercise we are using port 31337 for Web UI **

Lastly, if you are only planning on using this internally on your network then you may want to look into restricting which IP’s can access it otherwise you can leave this blank for now.

webui image 2

To access the Web UI service now running on port 31337 and make sure it is currently running properly you can use the loopback IP of the computer you are currently on.  Open up Firefox or Internet Explorer and in the address bar type: http://127.0.0.1:31337/gui/

Pretty much to access your  Web UI you will always need to use the following structure:

http://address:port/gui/

Address = can vary, we will be using a direct IP address until part 3.

Port = must be the port you set Web UI to listen on.

/gui/ = is telling uTorrent to use the GUI by looking in the GUI directory.

This should now bring up the Web UI interface.  Just type in the login credentials you provided and viola!  Fantastic! It’s working!  Now we want to access it remotely.  We will need a bit of information namely your Internal network IP (for accessing the Web UI while on your network)

You can get all this information easily by running a Command Prompt in Windows (Start Menu >> Type cmd + hit Enter).  This will bring up a Command Prompt window.

In this window type the command ipconfig /all

Now depending on which network card you are using to connect to your network, you should be able to find your IP address by looking at the results (it should be under IPv4 Address):

webui image 3

** I know wireless and Bittorrent isn’t the best idea, a hardline to your router is ideal.  I’m just using my laptop for this demonstration.

Using this address you can access Web UI remotely from any computer on your network (including the one it is setup on).  Assuming  mine is the IP shown (192.168.2.3) it can be accessed by typing it into the address bar with the port and /gui like so: http://192.168.2.3:31337/gui/

webui image 4

Part 3 – Access from Anywhere, Free DNS Usage! (Optional – Recommended)

Assuming you’ve forwarded the correct port on your router (we are using port 31337 for this demonstration), you can proceed with the next step.  Since your external IP changes from time to time it can be a real hassle to remember your IP.  Thanks to services like www.no-ip.com which provide free DNS services you can add a domain name for your external IP address for FREE!  This is much easier to remember.  So instead of typing something like http://199.201.33.121:31337/gui/ (which will change in a few days) you can access the same Web UI by always typing something like http://customurl.no-ip.org:31337/gui/ which is permanent and is much easier to remember!  I recommend this solution as it updates automatically.

I’m not going to walk you through this part however, since there are so many options to www.no-ip.com, however it’s the only one I’ve tested and works perfectly.  Here’s a list of possible free DNS solutions:

www.no-ip.com – tested, working.

www.opendns.com

www.dydns.com

www.everydns.com

www.dnsexit.com

Most of these should work as well, I just don’t know if they allow you to specify ports or not (if not, this would not work).  If anyone else has tested these, please leave feedback and I’ll update this article.

This will also work if you host your own domain of course J.  But that’s a whole different tutorial.

Troubleshooting

  • Remote access (outside the network) stopped working after awhile.

I recommend whichever computer you are going to use as your Web UI host, that you set a static IP for this.  This will prevent it from losing it’s IP and screwing with your port forward settings on the router.
